Wedgwood Simmons Bedding Company Commemorative Transferware Platter

This large circular platter is a commemorative piece manufactured by Wedgwood for the Simmons Bedding Company. The item is made of fine creamware earthenware featuring black transfer-printed decoration on a creamy white ground. The center of the platter displays the Simmons corporate logo, a crowned letter S set within a swirling circular motif. The rim is adorned with ten individual icons representing various global cultures and regions, including the Great Seal of the United States, a maple leaf, a koala, a Japanese torii gate and pagoda, a European heraldic motif, Big Ben, the Papal Tiara, a bull head, a toucan, and an Aztec figure. The reverse of the platter features an illustration of an owl on a scroll with the text ONE THIRD OF YOUR LIFE IS SPENT IN BED, followed by a paragraph of text regarding the importance of the bed. The underside is marked with two circular stamps: OF ETRURIA WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND BARLASTON and ENGRAVED BY THE WEDGEWOOD STUDIOS.
