He subsequently established himself as a skilled and respected craftsman within the London watchmaking trade. John Wightwick enjoyed a distinguished professional career and was admitted as an Honorary Freeman of the prestigious Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, one of London’s most influential horological guilds. WIGHTWICK & MOSS In 1788, Wightwick and Moss entered into partnership and established their workshop at 24 Ludgate Street, in the City of London, close to St Paul’s Cathedral. The firm specialised in the production of fine fusee-and-chain pocket watches, as well as elaborate table clocks and longcase clocks, often housed in cases made from richly figured and precious woods. Following the death of Thomas Moss in 1823, the business continued to operate under the name Wightwick & Moss. Watches and clocks bearing the firm’s name are recorded until circa 1836, suggesting that the business was subsequently continued by successors or members of the family.
