WILLIAM CALLOW, R.W.S. (BRITISH 1812-1908) MELROSE ABBEY FROM THE BANKS OF THE RIVER TWEED Watercolour over pencil, heightened with touches of bodycolour and scratching out Signed and indistinctly dated (lower left) 35 x 53cm (13¾ x 20¾in.) Callow visited Scotland in the summer of 1843 and stopped at Melrose on his way home. He later exhibited two watercolours at the Society of Painters in Water-colours of views of Melrose Abbey, in 1847 (Melrose Abbey from the Banks of the Tweed) and 1849 (Distant View of Melrose Abbey) and the present watercolour is likely to have been one of these.
