Edited by John Foster Kirk. London: Bickers & Son, 1893. 510 pages. Complete. An important historical account of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire under Francisco Pizarro, written by the distinguished American historian William Hickling Prescott (1796–1859). First published in 1847, this celebrated work remains one of the classic nineteenth-century histories of the Spanish conquest of South America. Illustrations The volume contains: - A historical map of Peru at the time of the conquest. - A facsimile plate reproducing two signatures of Francisco Pizarro. Binding and provenance An attractive nineteenth-century full leather binding, richly decorated with gilt floral ornaments and gilt lettering on the spine. The front cover bears a gilt-stamped heraldic shield with the motto “Garde ta foi” (“Keep thy faith”), associated with the historic English Felsted School. The book retains its original marbled page edges and colourful marbled endpapers. Of particular interest is the original school prize inscription dated 1900, recording the presentation of the volume to a pupil for academic achievement. This provides an appealing historical provenance and makes the book a particularly attractive example of Victorian school prize binding. Condition Complete, with all 510 pages and both illustrated items present. The interior is in neat, well-preserved condition. The leather binding shows age-related rubbing and wear, particularly along the spine and joints, while retaining its attractive gilt decoration. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. An attractive and complete nineteenth-century historical work, distinguished by its decorative leather binding, school prize provenance and fascinating subject matter concerning the Inca civilization and the conquest of Peru.
