WINGU TINGIMA Pitjantjatjara language, c.1919 - 2010 Kungkarrakalpa, 2010 acrylic on linen 128 x 94 cm bears inscription verso: TPWT10200, Tjungu Palya, Wingu Tingima 2010 PROVENANCE Tjungu Palya, South Australia, Cat No.TPWT10200 Chapman Gallery, Australian Capital Territory Private Collection, Tasmania D'Lan Davidson, Victoria The Collection of Barbara Hansen, Victoria Accompanied by a copy of certificate of the authenticity from Tjungu Palya Wingu Tingima was a senior Pitjantjatjara woman and an important painter from the eastern APY Lands. Born in the remote desert near Kuru Ala, Tingima held extensive cultural knowledge relating to the Country and Tjukurpa of the region. She began painting later in life and became known for her bold, highly individual compositions, through which she depicted the significant women's sites and ancestral narratives of her Country. This painting depicts Kuru Ala, an important women's site associated with the Kungkarrakalpa (Seven Sisters) Tjukurpa. The story follows a group of ancestral sisters as they travel across Country while being pursued by Wati Nyiru. At Kuru Ala, Kangkuru munu Malanypa nyinanyi - the older sister sits with her younger sister near the cave in which the women are staying. During their journey, the sisters encounter what appears to be a quandong tree and gather its fruit. After tasting the fruit, however, they realise they have been deceived and recognise it as another of Nyiru's attempts to trick them. The sisters continue to flee from Nyiru, seeking refuge in the cave at Kuru Ala. Nyiru possesses powerful transformative abilities and assumes different forms as he follows the women, travelling both above and beneath the ground in his pursuit. Through this work, Tingima depicts aspects of the Seven Sisters narrative associated with Kuru Ala, a place to which she held a deep personal and cultural connection. The painting brings together Country, ancestral narrative and cultural knowledge, while deeper aspects of the Tjukurpa remain culturally held. © WINGU TINGIMA / Copyright Agency, 2026
