A good, strong impression of New Hollstein’s final state. Nowell-Usticke records this etching as extremely rare (‘RR – A very scarce print’). Trimmed to or slightly within the platemark. This intimate etching of a woman reading has the quiet immediacy of a portrait, although the sitter remains unidentified. Absorbed in her book, she is observed with remarkable naturalism. Particularly subtle is the light falling from behind at left, creating delicate effects across her face and neck (see Hinterding, 2008, p. 582). – Laid down overall on laid paper, with some retouching and pen-and-ink additions. | 1606 Leiden - Amsterdam 1669 | 15.-18.
