17th Century Dutch Golden Age - Portrait of a Child with a Coral Cross (Circle of W. de Geest) Period: 17th Century (Dutch Golden Age / Baroque) Technique: Oil on wood panel (cradled) Dimensions: 38 x 29.5 cm (excluding frame) Condition report: Varnished. Displays older restorations and infills, with visible retouching in the child's face and along the lace collar. A horizontal scratch runs across the lower register. Raking light shows a slightly uneven surface. The wood panel shows a visible vertical grain structure and two vertical joints/seams running its full length. The reverse has been structurally stabilized with an old cradling. This charming 17th-century bust-length portrait captures a young child from a wealthy patrician family during the Dutch Golden Age. The painting stands out for the meticulous care given to the clothing and symbolic attributes: The infant is dressed in a dark damask or embroidered gown, adorned with a finely detailed, starched white lace collar and a matching close-fitting bonnet framing the face. The central focal point of the composition is a red Mediterranean coral bead necklace supporting a gem-set cross. In the 17th century, coral held high luxury value alongside a profound double meaning: it served an apotropaic function (prophylactic protection against childhood illness and the "evil eye") and a strong Christian symbol, with the deep red hue foreshadowing Christ’s blood and Passion. The treatment of the fine lace, the realistic rendering of the face with large clear eyes, and the dramatic contrast against a dark background align perfectly with the portraiture tradition of the Northern Netherlands. The style strongly recalls the child portraits by Wybrand Simonsz. de Geest, the official court painter to the House of Orange-Nassau in Leeuwarden. The reverse of the panel features a highly significant, well-preserved red wax seal bearing coats of arms. The heraldic shield is charged with a scallop shell (coquille Saint-Jacques) and topped with a plume of ostrich feathers emanating from a knot or crown. This mark indicates an aristocratic or noble European provenance (frequently found in French, Flemish, or German noble families of the 17th/18th century), providing an exceptional provenance trail for future genealogical research and adding substantial collector value. Portraits of children from the Dutch Baroque are highly prized by collectors for their extreme rarity, as formal oil paintings of infants were seldom commissioned compared to adults. This specific work captures a deeply intimate historical narrative; the contrast between the child's tender expression and the protective coral cross provides a poignant window into the high infant mortality anxieties of the 17th-century elite. Furthermore, the combination of the exquisite starched lace collar and the prestigious noble coat of arms on the reverse elevates this lot from an anonymous portrait to a highly documented, prized artifact of patrician history Provenance: Private collection, Netherlands.
