Yves Swolfs - Le Prince de la Nuit - 7 Tirages

Yves Swolfs – The Prince of the Night – 6 large black-and-white prints + bonus serigraph – Glénat, 2001 – 58 × 43 cm – Possibly never officially released Special collection of six impressive large-format black-and-white prints by the Belgian comic artist Yves Swolfs, sourced directly from the printer, supplemented with a seventh print from 2000. This exceptional series consists of six large reproductions of comic pages from Le Prince de la Nuit (The Prince of the Night), with the copyright notice 2001 Éditions Glénat, Yves Swolfs. What makes this collection special is that the six prints were obtained directly from the printer and are presumed never to have been released as a regular commercial edition. There is as yet no documented official portfolio edition exactly matching these six large black-and-white prints. The prints were received individually, without cover or publisher’s folder. It is possible that these are copies from an unrealized publishing project or printer’s proofs that did not enter regular distribution. This cannot be established with certainty. Details of the six prints Artist: Yves Swolfs (Belgium, born 1955) Series: Le Prince de la Nuit (The Prince of the Night) Publisher credit: Éditions Glénat Year: 2001 Number: Six interrelated large black-and-white prints Dimensions: 58 × 43 cm per sheet Technique: Printed black-and-white reproductions of original comic pages; exact printing technique not determined Edition: Sturdy paper with a wide black, printed border Copyright notice: 2001 Éditions Glénat, Yves Swolfs Signature: Not hand-signed Numbering: Unnumbered Provenance: Directly obtained from the printer Release status: Possibly never released as a regular commercial edition These are original printed copies of these reproductions, not original hand-drawn comic pages. Overview of the six prints 1. The Flying Vampire – Le Chasseur (The Hunter) An impressive opening scene that sets the mysterious atmosphere of the forest and the looming presence of the vampire Kergan. 2. The Cemetery with the Owl – Élise (Elise) A dramatic Gothic scene at a family grave, with rain, emotion and Swolfs’ characteristic dark visual language. 3. Paris and Notre-Dame – Pleine Lune / Le Journal de Maximilien A particularly atmospheric cityscape with classic cars, Parisian architecture and a striking worm’s-eye view of Notre-Dame in the rain. The exact album origin still needs confirmation. 4. The Girl in the Forest – La Lettre de l'inquisiteur A medieval scene with a young woman among dense, knotted trees. The meticulous line work gives the presentation a nearly fairy-tale, yet ominous aura. 5. The Manor at Night – Le Chasseur An exciting nocturnal scene with the sound of a doorbell, expressive faces, a black cat and the arrival of a mysterious visitor. 6. The Castle in the Mountains – Retour à Ruhenberg A spectacular landscape composition with a rider on horseback, snowy mountain passes and the ominous Ruhenberg Castle in the distance. The six prints demonstrate Swolfs’ exceptional drawing skill, with his detailed line work, strong black-and-white contrasts, Gothic architecture and cinematic compositions. Bonus print – Yves Swolfs, 2000 As an extra, a seventh print is included: a serigraph by Yves Swolfs from 2000, with a moody cemetery scene. This bonus print has the same large format of about 58 × 43 cm and thematically complements the six prints from Le Prince de la Nuit. The bonus print does not necessarily belong to the same edition as the six Glénat prints and is therefore listed separately. The offered lot comprises seven large prints in total. Origin and possible rarity The six prints from 2001 were received by the current owner directly from the printer, not via a bookstore or regular sale. They were delivered loose, without a portfolio cover, accompanying booklet or numbering. Despite research, no official commercial edition has been found that exactly matches this sequence of six black-and-white prints at the 58 × 43 cm size. This suggests the series may never have been officially put on the market. A possible status as proofs, printer’s copies or part of an unrealized portfolio cannot be confirmed. This unclear publishing history, combined with the prints’ direct provenance from the printer, makes the collection interesting for specialized collectors of Yves Swolfs and European comic art. Condition The prints are in attractive vintage condition. The black-and-white illustrations retain their strong contrasts and fine details. There are light signs of use and storage, as well as small irregularities along some edges. Please view the photos carefully. They are an integral part of the description and provide a good view of the condition of the offered prints. About the artist Yves Swolfs is among the best-known Belgian comic artists of his generation. He gained international fame with works such as Durango and Le Prince de la Nuit. His work combines the classical Franco-Belgian comic tradition with Gothic horror, historical settings and a strong cinematic storytelling style. Le Prince de la Nuit tells of the centuries-long struggle between the Rougemont family and the vampire Vladimir Kergan. Collectibility This collection stands out for: - Six large black-and-white prints from 2001, with copyright notice from Éditions Glénat. - Direct provenance from the printer, without mediation by regular art or comic shops. - Possibly never released as a regular commercial series, so the original edition size and distribution are unknown. - An extra serigraph from 2000, also in large format. - Seven impressive illustrations of 58 × 43 cm, particularly suitable for individual framing. - An exceptional and intriguing set for collectors of Yves Swolfs, Le Prince de la Nuit, Franco-Belgian comic art and unique graphic editions. The complete set of seven prints is offered as a single lot.
