Zoetrope/Praxinoscope, Whirligig of Life

Circa 1880 McLoughlin Bros., New York "Whirligig of Life" zoetrope/praxinoscope optical animation toy. Features a center assembly of (12) mirrors with interchangeable illustrated strips. Includes (8) color picture-band strips depicting sequential scenes in motion, including a girl skipping rope, boy blowing bubbles, boy with dog jumping through a hoop, tightrope performer, juggler, drummer and other subjects. When rotated, the sequential images are reflected in the mirrors to create the illusion of movement. Animation strips vary in length, with the longest approx. 25" and shortest approx. 16". Underside of the turned wooden base retains much of the original "Whirligig of Life" paper label with operating directions. Overall approx. 7" high x 8.5" wide. The strips show considerable age and wear, including staining, creases, tears, tape repairs and areas of paper loss, with some strips incomplete. Most of the center mirror pieces show wear, including some that are cracked. The zoetrope itself shows additional surface wear consistent with age. Estimate $300 - $600
