An fascinating and authentic example of Japanese artisanal craft: a Hannya mask (般若) finely hand-carved from a single block of wood. The Hannya mask (般若) is one of the most iconic figures of Japanese cultural heritage. Contrary to what one might think, it does not represent a male demon, but the spirit of a woman consumed by pain, morbid jealousy and betrayal, transformed into a vengeful demon. When viewed frontally or from above, the mask expresses terrifying fury. If slightly tilted downward, the metallic eyes and furrowed brow catch the light, revealing a deep, poignant, human sadness. These unsigned pieces were typically made by master artisans for regional festivals, local theater performances, or simply as protective wall decoration for homes, as traditionally Hannya masks are believed to ward off evil spirits. Based on its patina, carved style, and craftsmanship, the estimated period of creation should be the Showa period (1926-1989). The work shows on the back the characteristic precise chisel marks left by the artisan during traditional processing, evidence of authenticity and manual workmanship of the piece. The eyes and the upper row of teeth are entirely coated in metal applied. This traditional technique, which requires extremely high craftsmanship, not only gives an extraordinary metallic shine to the gaze under light, but enhances the magnetism and supernatural nature of the character.
