Ancient Roman Bronze Three-Bladed Arrowheads – Remarkable Collection of 18 Battlefield Projectiles Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–3rd century AD Material: Bronze Number of pieces: 18 Weight: 1.5–3.5 g each Length: 21.2–34.8 mm Width: 5.8–11.8 mm From a Private European Collection. A highly attractive and remarkably extensive collection of eighteen Ancient Roman bronze three-bladed arrowheads, traditionally associated with a battlefield context and dating to the Roman Imperial period, circa 1st–3rd century AD. All eighteen examples display the distinctive three-bladed or trilobate construction, with three pronounced edges extending towards the point. This sophisticated construction created a strong and effective projectile while keeping the arrowhead remarkably compact and lightweight. The collection is particularly impressive because of the considerable variety represented within a single group. Although all examples share the same fundamental three-bladed construction, the individual arrowheads differ noticeably in length, width, proportions and blade profile. Their surfaces display beautiful ancient patination ranging from deep brown and reddish tones to olive-green and darker mineral deposits. Despite their considerable age, the characteristic three-dimensional construction remains clearly recognisable throughout the collection. The three-bladed arrowhead: Three-bladed arrowheads represent one of the most distinctive projectile designs employed in ancient warfare. Unlike conventional flat-bladed arrowheads, their three longitudinal blades were arranged around a central axis, creating a rigid projectile with multiple cutting edges. The design had a long history throughout the ancient Mediterranean and neighbouring regions. During the Roman Imperial period, archery formed an important component of Roman military tactics, particularly through specialised auxiliary archers recruited from regions with longstanding traditions of infantry and mounted archery. Such projectiles provide a fascinating insight into a side of Roman warfare often overshadowed by the famous legionary sword, shield and armour. Roman military effectiveness depended upon a sophisticated combination of different troop types and weapons, including large numbers of comparatively small projectile weapons. A remarkable battlefield collection: The special appeal of the present lot lies not simply in an individual ancient arrowhead, but in the survival of an impressive collection of eighteen examples. Displayed together, they provide an excellent opportunity to examine the subtle variations that existed within this highly successful ancient projectile tradition. Differences in proportions, blade profiles and dimensions can be observed throughout the group while maintaining a remarkably coherent overall appearance. The state of preservation is particularly attractive. The three-bladed construction remains clearly identifiable on the individual examples, while their naturally developed surfaces and varied patination preserve their strong archaeological character. Their compact dimensions also vividly demonstrate the practical nature of ancient archery. These were not ceremonial objects, but functional military projectiles designed to be carried in quantity and employed in combat. Placed together as a group, the eighteen arrowheads create a particularly evocative visual connection with the realities of warfare during antiquity. Rarity and collector appeal: Individual ancient three-bladed arrowheads are archaeologically known and should not in themselves be regarded as exceptionally rare. However, substantial collections of well-preserved examples are considerably less frequently encountered together on the collectors' market. The opportunity to acquire eighteen examples as a single ensemble – all displaying the characteristic three-bladed construction and surviving in such attractive condition – gives this collection considerably greater historical, visual and collector appeal than an isolated projectile. Particularly noteworthy is the combination of quantity, typological consistency, individual variation and excellent overall preservation. No two examples are completely identical, yet together the eighteen arrowheads form an unusually extensive and visually coherent collection of ancient military projectiles. A highly desirable collection for enthusiasts of Roman militaria, ancient weaponry and battlefield archaeology. An impressive ensemble of eighteen Ancient Roman bronze three-bladed arrowheads – small but evocative objects providing a tangible connection with warfare during the Roman Imperial period.
