A Roman military phalera is a sculpted, disk-shaped medal awarded to soldiers or entire units for acts of bravery and distinguished service. Crafted from gold, silver, bronze, or glass, sets of these decorations were mounted on leather harnesses and worn on the chest during military parades. Phalerae often depicted protective or powerful mythological figures and deities, such as Medusa, Hercules, Minerva, or Mars. The iconic, repeating designs served both as decorations of honor and as powerful talismans.
