Gandhara Stone A Fine Gandharan Stone Lion Gandhara

A Fine Gandharan Stone Lion Gandhara, Afghanistan, 3rd–5th century AD Stone Height: 9 cm | Width: 13 cm A highly expressive Gandharan stone lion, carved in compact relief and dating to the 3rd–5th century AD, originating from the ancient cultural region of Gandhara, in present-day Afghanistan. The animal is shown standing firmly in profile upon an integral rectangular base, with the head turned slightly forward and the body rendered with a remarkable combination of strength and stylisation. The broad chest, powerful legs and rounded haunches contrast beautifully with the lively treatment of the head. The face is particularly engaging, with large circular eyes, a pronounced muzzle and an open, almost smiling expression, while the mane is indicated by a series of boldly carved locks framing the head. Despite its relatively small dimensions, the sculpture possesses a strong architectural presence. The compact proportions and flat termination at the rear strongly suggest that the lion originally formed part of a larger Buddhist architectural or sculptural ensemble, possibly incorporated into the decoration of a throne, pedestal, stupa or framing element. The lion held an important symbolic role within Buddhist art. It was closely associated with Shakyamuni Buddha, whose teachings were traditionally compared to the powerful “lion’s roar” proclaiming the Dharma. Lions frequently appear as guardians and supporting figures on Buddhist thrones and architectural monuments, and the term simhasana, literally “lion throne,” reflects this long-established association with spiritual authority and sovereignty. In Gandharan art, such imagery developed within the distinctive artistic environment created by the meeting of Buddhist iconography with Hellenistic and north-western Indian sculptural traditions. The present example, with its robust modelling, stylised facial features and compact architectural form, is a particularly charming surviving element from this important Buddhist artistic tradition. The stone retains an attractive naturally aged surface, with areas of earthy encrustation and weathering accumulated over many centuries. The softened modelling and minor abrasions contribute to the authentic archaeological character of the sculpture while leaving the principal features clearly legible. Provenance Paul Rutten, Asiatic & Tribal Art, Amsterdam, Keizersgracht 574, one of Amsterdam’s established specialists in Asian, Himalayan and tribal art. Acquired from Paul Rutten in November 2006 by an important private collection, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Accompanied by the original Paul Rutten, Asiatic & Tribal Art insurance valuation report dated 9 November 2006, illustrating the present sculpture and identifying it as: “Gandhara lion – stone – 3rd–5th century AD – Afghanistan.” The original documentation further records that the lion was considered likely to have originally formed part of a larger ensemble, possibly integrated into the decoration of a throne or framing element belonging to a Buddhist sculpture. Thereafter retained continuously in the same private Amsterdam collection from 2006 until 2026. Condition Ancient stone sculpture with wear, weathering, surface abrasions and minor losses consistent with age and archaeological origin. The surface retains attractive old encrustation and natural patination. The principal sculptural features remain clearly preserved. With its documented Amsterdam provenance extending back to 2006, original dealer documentation, expressive carving and strong Buddhist iconography, this small but powerful lion represents an appealing example of Gandharan sculptural art.
