Rare Antique Salt-Glazed Stoneware Pouring Vessel / Jug – Westerwald, 18th/19th Century Description A particularly large and rare antique salt-glazed stoneware vat with a pouring spout and two flanking handles, traditionally from the German Westerwald region (often referred to as 'Cologne ware'). Unlike the regular closed or open storage pots, this piece is equipped with a functional pouring spout, historically used for storing and pouring liquids such as oil, vinegar, or brine. The vessel is made in traditional salt-glazed stoneware with distinctive cobalt-blue hand-painted decoration and decorative details. The interior and the unglazed underside show the authentic, rough character of historic firing. A beautiful and sturdy piece of folk art and farm kitchenware with a well-worn patina. The material of this object is salt-glazed stoneware (ceramics), finished with a hand-painted cobalt-blue decoration. Stoneware is fired at high temperatures from special clay, during which kitchen salt is thrown into the oven. The salt evaporates and reacts with the clay, creating on the outside a hard, dense, glossy salt-glaze layer that makes the vessel completely watertight and durable. The interior and underside are unglazed and show the authentic, rough character of the fired earthenware.
