Late Roman/Early Byzantine Lead Ancient Byzantine Lead...

Ancient Byzantine Lead Seal with Cruciform Monogram and Five-Line Greek Inscription Early Byzantine Period, circa 7th century AD Material: Lead Weight: 10.0 g Dimensions: 27.7 × 25.8 × 2.1 mm A remarkable and very rare Byzantine lead seal featuring an impressive cruciform monogram and an extensive five-line Greek inscription, reflecting the religious traditions and sophisticated administrative culture of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Cruciform Monogram: The obverse displays a prominently raised cruciform design with a central circular element and Greek letters arranged around its four arms. The composition corresponds to the tradition of Byzantine invocation monograms, which expressed religious devotion and frequently accompanied the names and titles of officials, ecclesiastical dignitaries and other prominent individuals. The visible lettering is consistent with elements of the traditional Greek invocation Τῷ σῷ δούλῳ, meaning "To your servant". The Five-Line Greek Inscription: The reverse is particularly striking, displaying five horizontal lines of carefully arranged Greek capital letters. Numerous individual characters remain clearly distinguishable, providing an impressive example of early Byzantine epigraphic craftsmanship. The extensive inscription is a particularly attractive feature, preserving an important element of the personal and administrative identity associated with the original owner. Historical Significance: During the Byzantine Empire, lead seals were essential instruments of authentication, used to secure correspondence, official documents and administrative communications. A seal was more than a practical object. It represented the identity and authority of its owner, while religious invocations expressed the profound influence of Christianity upon Byzantine society. The seventh century was a particularly significant period in Byzantine history, marked by major political, religious and territorial transformations. Objects such as this provide a tangible connection to the individuals and institutions that shaped the Eastern Roman Empire. Very rare ancient artefact: The seal retains its distinctive circular form, an impressive raised cruciform design and extensive Greek lettering on both sides. Its attractive pale, earthy patina beautifully complements the ancient relief decoration. Despite historical edge losses and surface fissures, the principal design and substantial portions of the inscriptions remain clearly visible. The combination of a distinctive cruciform invocation monogram, an extensive five-line Greek inscription and appealing ancient patina makes this a remarkable collector's piece. An evocative surviving artefact of Byzantine religious and administrative history, offering an authentic connection to the world of the Eastern Roman Empire.
