Late Roman/Early Byzantine Lead Ancient Roman Triform Head Lead Seal

Ancient Roman Triform Head Lead Seal Late Roman – Early Byzantine Period, circa 4th–6th Century AD Weight: 2.6 g Dimensions: 13.0 × 12.2 × 4.5 mm From a Private European Collection. An exceptionally rare and highly intriguing Ancient Roman lead seal, modelled in the remarkable form of a triform bearded male head. Unlike the considerably more familiar flat Roman lead seals, the present object was conceived as a genuinely three-dimensional composition. The bearded male face appears in three directions – frontal and to either side – creating an extraordinary triple-faced image. Despite measuring only 13 mm, the individual facial features remain clearly recognisable. The unusual sculptural construction is further enhanced by an attractive sandy earthen patina, beautifully accentuating the contours of the three faces. An Ancient Tradition of the Triform Head: The remarkable imagery of the present seal belongs to a much older tradition within the ancient world. Triform and triple-faced male heads were known centuries before the manufacture of this seal. Particularly fascinating parallels occur on extremely rare ancient coinage from Asia Minor and the Levant, where a triform bearded male head appears as the principal image. Rare 4th-century BC coins from Cilicia have been catalogued by major numismatic auction houses explicitly as “Triform bearded male head”. The motif was also adopted elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. Reference: Auction Nomos AG, November 2025, lot 168, Hammer Price CHF 1'400.-- (+ Commission 22.5%) These ancient coins are not directly connected with the present Roman seal, but they provide a fascinating iconographic parallel, demonstrating that the unusual concept of representing a male head simultaneously in several directions belonged to an artistic and symbolic tradition extending back many centuries. Triple-faced and triple-headed imagery continued to occur during the Roman period and Late Antiquity, sometimes within religious and symbolic contexts. The precise identity of the enigmatic bearded figure represented on the present seal remains unknown. It may have possessed religious, protective, symbolic or official significance, but in the absence of a securely identified parallel its precise interpretation should remain open. This mystery considerably adds to the fascination of the object. Seals – The Administrative Fingerprints of the Roman World: Lead seals formed part of the sophisticated administrative and commercial machinery of the Roman world. They could be attached to cords or bindings securing goods and consignments and are known from imperial, civic, fiscal and military contexts. These small objects therefore provide fascinating archaeological evidence for the administration, movement and control of goods throughout the vast territories of the Roman Empire. The present specimen is particularly remarkable because it departs dramatically from the conventional flat seal. Instead, its maker transformed the lead into an elaborate three-dimensional triform image, combining the practical tradition of ancient sealing with one of the most unusual forms of ancient portrait iconography. It therefore represents far more than simply a Roman lead seal: it is a fascinating meeting point between Roman administration, miniature portraiture and the ancient tradition of the triform head. The combination of its exceptionally unusual three-dimensional construction, enigmatic triple-faced imagery, miniature dimensions and attractive ancient patina makes this a particularly fascinating and highly collectable survivor from Late Antiquity. An exceptionally rare and enigmatic triform lead seal – a remarkable example of ancient miniature craftsmanship and one of the most unusual forms of portrait imagery encountered on an ancient sealing.
